The Biology Ph.D. program received the 2019 Dean’s Award for Inclusive Excellence in Graduate Education. Molecular biology is the study of biology at the molecular level. The fundamental principles of biology that are acceptable to this day include cell theory, gene theory, evolutionary theory, homeostasis, and energy. Khrapko’s lab is studying mutations in mtDNA and their effects on cellular physiology, aging and disease. Indeed, in some circles, the emphasis on molecular biology and its philosophy of reductionism caused initial tumult for many evolutionary biologists who felt that the autonomy of biology was challenged as it stood to be engulfed by the physical sciences (Mayr, 1982; Wilson, 1996).
A course in biological sciences will combine practical and theory work with a mixture of lectures, seminars and lab work. Our Biology program is versatile, allowing you to complement your Genetics, Cell Biology, Physiology, Ecology, Plant Biology, and Human Anatomy courses with studies from the arts, humanities, languages, and mathematics areas. The Department, like the discipline, is diverse, offering both undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to study living systems at the level of genes and proteins to entire ecosystems.
Students concentrate their coursework and research within one of two tracks: Cell, Molecular, Health, and Disease (CMHD) Biology or Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal (EEO) Biology. The biological sciences are currently experiencing a revolution driven by technological developments in genomics, proteomic sequencing, isotopic analysis, logging of acoustic and movement data, 3D scanning, remote unmanned monitoring, and computational power to analyze vast data sets.
A five-course minor in biology is also available for undergraduate students. Postgraduate study is a popular choice for biology graduates. Our upper-level courses cover diverse sub-disciplines within biology, and offer you the chance to study areas you love the most—whether that’s immunology, arctic ecology, developmental biology, evolution, or another track—guided by faculty doing real-world research in those fields.
